Low bone mineral density may affect bone remodeling and the stability of dental implants. Determination of biochemical markers of bone metabolism allows us to assess the features of the course of these processes in the long term after implantation. The aim is to determine the dynamics of biochemical markers of bone remodeling in patients with low bone mineral density during the long-term follow-up after dental implantation and to assess the effect of correction of bone metabolic disorders on these parameters. In patients of younger (18–44 years) and older (45–59 years) age groups, calcium concentration, alkaline and acid phosphatase activity in blood, and urinary oxyproline levels were determined at 12 and 18 months after dental implantation. Patients with low bone mineral density demonstrated increased activity of bone remodeling markers compared with individuals with normal bone mineral density. The most pronounced changes were observed in the comparison group, where elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, and oxyproline persisted throughout 12-18 months of follow-up. In the main group, correction of bone metabolic disorders was associated with a tendency toward normalization of the studied parameters and their approximation to control values. Low bone mineral density is associated with persistent activation of bone remodeling after dental implantation. Comprehensive correction of bone metabolic disorders contributes to reducing the severity of metabolic changes and may be considered an important component of the rehabilitation of patients with low bone mineral density undergoing dental implantation.
