Today, it is known that about 80% of cases of exudative erythema multiforme are caused by herpes simplex virus and its associates. It occurs more often in adolescents and is associated with orofacial (nasal and labial) localisation. Our study aims to investigate the clinical manifestations of exudative erythema multiforme associated with herpes simplex virus in an 11-year-old child and to develop a scheme for the comprehensive treatment of this disease. The parents of an 11-year-old child complained to the Dental Centre of the Bogomolets National Medical University of severe swelling of the red border of the lips, fever up to 38.5˚C, sore throat and oral cavity, rash on the skin near the mouth, lips, general weakness, headache. Clinical and laboratory examination of the patient was performed: clinical dental examination of the oral mucosa. To confirm the diagnosis, additional laboratory methods were used, including clinical blood test; blood test for IgE antibodies; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for specific IgM, IgG to herpes simplex virus with the determination of avidity index; polymerase chain reaction method (oral fluid test for herpes simplex virus). A scheme of complex treatment of exudative erythema multiforme associated with herpes simplex virus using a helium-neon laser was developed. Clinical control of the effectiveness of the proposed treatment regimen was performed by assessing the dynamics of the main clinical symptoms of the disease: the duration of the inflammatory process in the oral cavity and epithelialisation of the lesions.
