This article provides an overview of current studies concerning the impact of physical exertion and injuries on the structural and functional state of the knee joint. Key changes in cartilage tissue, menisci, ligaments, and subchondral bone are highlighted. The review summarizes modern data concerning the risks of developing degenerative processes, such as osteoarthritis, in athletes and physically active individuals. A comparative analysis of experimental and clinical findings related to mechanisms of tissue injury and adaptation is presented. The importance of considering the type and intensity of loads in the prevention of injuries and preservation of the functional integrity of the knee joint is discussed.
