In recent years, increasing attention has been paid by researchers to the relationship between maternal stress during pregnancy and the health status of the offspring born to such women. The translocation of stress effects through the maternal organism to the foetus, together with alterations in the implementation of the genetically determined programme of development of its functional systems, provides a pathogenetic basis for the occurrence of a wide range of pathologies during the child’s postnatal life. Such offspring are characterised by a polyendocrine syndrome, which also includes certain alterations in thyroid status. The aim of this study is to evaluate the peculiarities of the histostructure of the thyroid gland in the offspring born to mothers subjected to socio-emotional stress throughout pregnancy. The investigation was conducted on 44 eight-month-old offspring of non-linear rats obtained from intact mothers and from gestationally stressed mothers. It has been demonstrated that prenatal stress leads to alterations in the thyroid gland structure of the offspring. In male offspring, an increase in the size of a proportion of follicles, accumulation of colloid within their lumina, a decrease in thyrocyte height, and an enlargement of extrafollicular epithelial islets in the interfollicular spaces were observed. In female offspring, the morphological pattern of the gland was complicated by manifestations of hyperplastic proliferation of the thyroid epithelium of the formed follicles, as well as of the extrafollicular epithelium, with the appearance of islets of thyroid epithelium in which colloid gradually accumulated and which subsequently transformed into mature follicles. In addition, Sanderson’s cushions were observed. The identified features should be regarded as an intra-organ adaptation aimed at maintaining the organism’s provision with thyroid hormones. Stress-induced alterations in the thyroid gland structure of the offspring may form a basis for the development of thyroid disorders at subsequent stages of ontogenesis.
