Cardiovascular disease is a significant medical and social problem today. Despite the progress in the diagnosis, correction and prevention of heart disease, morphologists and clinicians continue to study the structure and function of the heart. We studied the mass parameters of heart parts of 120 laboratory mature white male rats, which were divided into four groups. The first group consisted of 30 intact six-month-old experimental animals, the second group consisted of 30 similar 24-month-old male laboratory rats, the third group consisted of 30 six-month-old experimental animals injected with cobalt chloride, and the fourth group consisted of 30 24-month-old rats with cobalt chloride intoxication. The chemical agent was administered daily intragastrically to rats at 4 mg/kg for 30 days. The animals were euthanised by bleeding under thiopental anaesthesia. Mass parameters of the left and right ventricles and atria, interventricular and atrial septa, and the ratio between the masses of the heart chambers were determined. Quantitative data were processed statistically. It was found that the intoxication of experimental animals with cobalt chloride led to uneven, disproportionate hypertrophy of heart parts, accompanied by an increase in their mass parameters. The administration of cadmium chloride to experimental animals led to a dominant rise in the mass of the left ventricle and left atrium in 24-monthold rats, which was confirmed by a decrease in the ventricular index by 9.6%, an increase in the Fulton index by 6.0%, and an increase in the atrial index by 4.3%. The studies conducted and the results obtained indicate that intoxication of laboratory white male rats with cobalt chloride leads to an uneven, disproportionate increase in the masses of heart parts. This is confirmed by the rise in the mass parameters of the ventricles and atria, Fulton and atrial indices, and a decrease in the ventricular index. The most pronounced mass changes dominated the left ventricle and left atrium of 24-month-old experimental animals.
