Rheumatoid arthritis is a multisystem, immune-mediated inflammatory disease that predominantly affects the diarthrodial joints, causing their destruction and progressive disability. Its presentation is heterogeneous, and the current view of its etiopathogenesis suggests that both genetic and environmental factors may be involved in its initiation. Despite significant progress in understanding the pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis, its aetiology remains unknown. The study aimed to determine the timing of adjuvant arthritis development in rats based on the study of the dynamics of degenerative changes in cartilage tissue and inflammatory markers in the blood of rats. The adjuvant arthritis model was induced by subplantar injection of complete Freund's adjuvant. A group of intact animals was also formed. On days 7, 21, and 35 after the adjuvant arthritis model, the tarsometatarsal joints of the experimental groups were isolated for histological examination. The number of leukocytes and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were determined in the blood at the indicated time points, and the total protein and rheumatoid factor content in the serum. The analysis of the results showed that on day 7 of the adjuvant arthritis modelling, there were signs of degenerative changes in articular cartilage, which corresponded to acute arthritis and correlated with the investigated haematological parameters of inflammation. With an increase in the observation period to 35 days, the process was chronicised, leading to severe arthrosis disorders in articular cartilage and the absence of normalisation of blood parameters. The data obtained can be used to substantiate and develop effective methods of treating arthritis in clinical practice.
