Despite considerable progress in the study of bone tissue, the etiology and course of many of its pa- thologies remain insufficiently understood due to the limited capabilities of traditional imaging methods, which are primarily focused on soft tissues. Advances in modern high-resolution imaging technologies have allowed detailed characterization of small vascular structures in bone, which participate in regeneration, remodeling, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. Recent publications highlight the role of trans-cortical capillaries in maintaining the functional activity of bone tissue, whereas their dysfunction underlies the development of the most common degenerative changes. Systematic analysis of current data on the arterial blood supply of long tubular bones reveals gaps in un- derstanding the pathogenesis of bone diseases and outlines promising directions for further research.
