Connective tissue dysplasia (CTD) is a congenital pathology that affects the structure and function of connective tissue due to defects in collagen synthesis. Lesions of the maxillofacial region, in particular temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), are often associated with CTD. Of particular interest is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is accompanied by excessive joint flexibility and cartilaginous disorders. The aim of the study is to analyze the literature on the effect of STD on the TMJ, focusing on etiology, diagnosis and therapeutic approaches. The etiopathogenesis of the TMD includes genetic factors, trauma, psycho-emotional state, structural changes and occlusion disorders. The results of the studies indicate a high incidence of TMD among patients with CTD, in particular in 71.4% of patients with joint hypermobility. Genetic mutations in the COL1A1 gene are associated with a decrease in the mechanical strength of tissues and anomalies in the development of the temporomandibular joint. Generally approved methods of treatment are the use of orthopedic splints and the normalization of the masticatory muscles function. Thus, CDT significantly increases the risk of TMD. Conducting additional laboratory tests in patients with existing phenotypic signs of CTD, especially during the formation of the dentition apparatus in the presence of bite pathology could allow assessing the TMD during orthodontic treatment.
