Optimizing the method of substantiating the medical and sanitary standards of chemical substances in the soil to preserve the health of people and the state of the biota is an urgent ecological-hygienic and medical-biological task. The work aimed to substantiate the algorithm for optimizing the volume of experimental studies in the medical and sanitary regulation of active substances (a. s.) of pesticides in the soil. On an array of 82 pesticides for which threshold limit values (TLVs) have been approved, the risk of migration of pesticides from soil to atmospheric air was assessed based on the preliminary and final integrated hazard indices (PIHI, FIHI). The criteria for calculating both indices were: saturated vapor pressure, Henry's constant, coefficient of the possibility of inhalation poisoning (CPIP). When defining FIHI, potential risk of occupational exposure (PROE) and potential risk of unprofessional influence (PRUPI) were also considered. For each criterion, three levels of danger, their scoring and weighting factors are defined. It was established that from 70 a. s. only 1 (hexachlorobutadiene) has a high and 2 (heptam and heptachlor) a medium PIHI: 9, 6 and 5 points, respectively. This makes them candidates for the experimental study of migration in the "soil-air" system. These 3 a. s. have a high FIHI (21, 18 and 17 points, respectively), for which determining the threshold concentration in the soil according to the air-migration indicator of harmfulness is mandatory. Methodology for forecasting the danger of contamination of the surface layer of the atmosphere a. s. of pesticides as a result of their evaporation from the soil, allows to optimisation the scheme of experimental substantiation of the medical and sanitary standard in the soil. If FIHI a. s. is (7–16.5) points (which is characteristic of 95.7% of the studied a. s.), conducting an experimental study of migration from soil to air is unnecessary. If FIHI a. s. is equal to (17–21) points, the experimental establishment of its threshold concentration in the soil according to the air-migration indicator of harmfulness is mandatory.
