Lesions of the heart muscle and its vessels are frequently encountered in clinical practice and are currently an important medical and social problem. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the diagnosis, correction, and prevention of cardiovascular disease, but morphologists and clinicians continue to study the structure and function of the myocardium. The quantitative morphological parameters of small-calibre arteries of the left and right ventricles of 60 outbred sexually mature white male shrews were studied, which were divided into four groups. The first group consisted of 15 intact six-month-old experimental animals, the second group consisted of 15 similar 24-month-old rats, the third group consisted of 15 six-month-old experimental animals injected with cobalt chloride, and the fourth group consisted of 15 24-month-old rats with cobalt chloride intoxication. The chemical was administered daily into the stomachs of rats at a dose of 4 mg/kg for 30 days. The animals were euthanised by bleeding under thiopental anaesthesia. Histological microsections were made from the heart's ventricles, which were used to morphometrically study the age-related morphological changes in the arteries under cobalt chloride intoxication in experimental animals. It was found that intoxication of white male rats with cobalt chloride led to an increase in the thickness of the wall of the left and right ventricular arteries, a decrease in their lumen, a significant decrease in the Kernogan index, atrophy, dystrophy and necrosis of endothelial cells, disruption of cellular morphological homeostasis, endothelial dysfunction, hypoxia, dystrophic and necrotic changes in cells and stromal structures, infiltration, and sclerosis. The severity of morphological changes prevailed in small-calibre arteries of the left ventricle of 24-month-old experimental rats. The relative volumes of affected endothelial cells in the studied arteries of the left ventricle of six-month-old experimental animals under the influence of cobalt chloride were equal to (20.90±0.15)%, in the right ventricle - (19.30±0.15)%. In 24-month-old rats, they reached (34.60±0.24)% and (31.40±0.24)%, respectively.
