Changes in photoperiod duration, which serves as the primary synchronizer of biological rhythms, represent a stress factor capable of disrupting the rhythmicity of somatic and visceral functions and disorganizing the mecha nisms of the organism’s adaptation to the effects of various factors. In this regard, studying the expression level of the immediate-early response gene c-fos in neuronal subpopulations of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothal amus is relevant for investigating stress responses. The experiment was conducted on male white rats, which were divided into two groups (each containing two subgroups). For 14 days, the animals were maintained under different lighting conditions: group 1 (LD) under a standard photoperiod of 12.00L:12.00D, and group 2 (DD) under conditions of constant darkness 00.00L:24.00D (light deprivation). The study was performed at 14:00 and 02:00. Identification of c-Fos in histological sections of the anterior hypothalamus was carried out using the method of indirect immuno fluorescence. Under standard lighting conditions (12.00L:12.00D), an increase in the fluorescence intensity of ma terial immunoreactive to c-Fos was detected in the medial parvocellular subnuclei of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus in rats at 02:00 compared with 14:00. During the daytime, this parameter was 26.34±1.510 µm², whereas it increased during the nighttime. Light deprivation caused a shift of the fluorescence intensity peak in the indicated subnuclei from the nighttime to the daytime period. The highest density of c-Fos-positive neurons in the studied hypothalamic subnuclei was recorded at 02:00 in animals maintained both under the 12.00L:12.00D regime and under 00.00L:24.00D conditions. Thus, the expression of the product of the immediate-early response gene c-fos, the c-Fos protein, in the medial parvocellular subnuclei of the paraventricular nucleus of the rat hypothalamus exhibits a pronounced rhythmic pattern. Under conditions of light deprivation, significant changes in its production were observed. In particular, the concentration index of this protein during the daytime period of the experiment was 0.543±0.0128 a.u., which significantly exceeded the control values.
